Then, move the yoke full forward to make sure the elevator moves down. It's a good idea to move the yoke forward then back, while turning it both left and right to make sure the control surfaces work through a full range of control movements. \par \par The rudder also should be checked for full travel. Press the right rudder pedal to the floor while checking to see that the rudder moves to the right. Then, push the left rudder pedal to the floor to see that the rudder moves to the left. In some airplanes, you might not be able to check the rudder during the before takeoff check since it is difficult to depress the rudder pedals unless the airplane is moving.\plain\f3\fs17\b \par } page_top.bmp page_btm.bmp Times New Roman {\rtf1\ansi\deff0\deftab720{\fonttbl{\f0\fnil\fcharset1 MS Sans Serif;}{\f1\fnil\fcharset1 Symbol;}{\f2\fswiss\fcharset0 System;}{\f3\fnil\fcharset0 MS Sans Serif;}{\f4\fnil\fcharset0 Arial;}{\f5\fnil\fcharset0 Times New Roman;}} {\colortbl\red0\green0\blue0;} \pard\plain\f5\fs18\cf0 5. It allows you to make sure the engine is warmed up and the associated systems and instruments are operating correctly before you take off. \par \par First, apply power until you reach the r.p.m. setting recommended in the POH. Check the magnetos by first turning the ignition switch to the right magneto position. Make sure the power loss isn't more than the maximum r.p.m. drop shown in the POH. Turn the ignition back to BOTH and then to the left magneto position to check the r.p.m. drop. Also, check to make sure the difference in the r.p.m. drop between the magnetos isn't more than what's listed in the POH.\plain\f4\fs18 \plain\f4\fs18\b If there is no drop in r.p.m. during the magneto check, there may be a broken magneto ground wire, and you should have an aviation maintenance technician check it out. \par \par Next, apply carburetor heat. You should get a slight drop in r.p.m. as the heated air enriches the fuel/air mixture. Then, turn the carb heat to COLD and watch for the r.p.m. to go back to where it started. \par \par If you notice a large initial drop in r.p.m. with engine roughness, followed by a slight r.p.m. increase, you may have carburetor ice. This ice can form during taxi in high humidity or visible moisture. \par \par You also need to check the suction gauge. Make sure the indication is within the limits found in the POH. If it's not, your vacuum instruments may not be accurate. Next, check the engine instruments and ammeter. The oil pressure gauge should be in the green, but the oil temperature might not be in the normal range until after takeoff. Usually, the ammeter needle should stabilize at zero. If the ammeter shows a discharge, you may have a problem with the alternator or an excessive electrical load. \par \par When you've completed the runup, reduce the throttle to idle, and adjust the throttle friction lock before you go on with the rest of the checklist.\plain\f3\fs17\b \par } page_top.bmp page_btm.bmp as Drawing Surface Arial {\rtf1\ansi\deff0\deftab720{\fonttbl{\f0\fnil\fcharset1 MS Sans Serif;}{\f1\fnil\fcharset1 Symbol;}{\f2\fswiss\fcharset0 System;}{\f3\fnil\fcharset0 MS Sans Serif;}{\f4\fnil\fcharset0 Arial;}} {\colortbl\red0\green0\blue0;} \pard\plain\f4\fs18\cf0 12.
